Redwood National Park

Originally I classified Redwood National Park as a 1 paw park because it has no pet friendly trails inside the park.  After looking at the additional information in the “Pets in the Parks” brochure I’ve changed it to a 3 paw park.  Redwood park is a network of National and State parks as well as Smith River National Recreational Area.  So the regulations change as you move between the different areas resulting in 12 different places you can explore with your dog.  While they might not be technically in the National Park, they are still in the Redwood forest and the park network.

Where to sleep

If you are camping there are four developed campgrounds in the park which dogs are allowed in. Dogs are not allowed in the backcountry camps.

  • Jedediah, 86 sites, 25’ RV or 21’ trailer
  • Mill Creek, 145 sites, 27’ RV or 24’ trailer
  • Elf Prairie, 75 sites, 27’ RV or 24’ trailer
  • Gold Bluffs Beach, 26 sites, no trailers

Where to play

There are three or four pet friendly beaches.  I say three or four because the park website lists three:

  • Freshwater
  • Gold Bluffs
  • Crescent
  • Hidden?

The pet brochure lists an additional one called Hidden.  However it’s well named because I can’t find it on the map, it’s apparently too hidden.  The pet brochure is dated 2014 making it not as up to date as the park website.  But if you find it leave a comment below.

A day use area at Wilson Creek is pet friendly as well as the scenic overlooks at Klamath River and Redwood Creek.

Where to walk

There are two gravel roads through old growth forest which pets are allowed to walk on.  Both are in State Parks.

  • Cal-Barrel Road in Prairie Creek Redwood State Park
  • Walker Road in Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park

Smith River NRA also has two trails

  • Myrtle Creek Trail
  • Craig’s Creek Trail

There are some other roads listed on the pet map but there are no details about them.

  • Howland Hill Road
  • Alder Camp Road
