Yet Another Dog Food Recall

To start with here is the link to the current recall.  https://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-recall/hills-dog-food-recall-expands/

If you feed your dog dog food you should get on the dog food advisor notification list.  They send out emails when dog food recalls are posted.  Once again Hill Pet Nutrition is sending out another recall for the same problem that has been going on pretty much ALL YEAR.  The first recall was January 31, 2019 for excessive levels of vitamin D.  High levels of vitamin D will cause kidney disfunction.  The symptoms include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss.

To recap

Hills Prescription Diet canned dog food

There are now 44 varieties of Hill canned food involved:

  • first recall Jan. 31 included of 54 lots
  • expanded recall March 20 included 31 more lots
  • additional expansion May 20 included 1 more lot

More than half of the varieties of food on the list are Prescription Diet the rest are Science Diet. Think about that, a veterinarian is actually prescribing this food which will potentially kill your dog!  Why, after 5 months are they still recalling products for the same problem?

This isn’t the first recall for Hill.  In 2015 there was a market withdrawal of 7 varieties of canned dog food for unknown reasons.  In 2014 they recalled 62 bags of dry food contaminated with salmonella.  Of course, there was 2007 with the huge melamine contamination that spanned 100’s of dog and cat foods.  One of Hills cat foods was involved in that recall as well.

I have written about dog food before and how complicated it can be to understand.  Hill foods have never impressed me with the large amounts of corn, wheat and meat by-products (i.e. slaughter house scraps) included in their top ingredients.  Nor can I say why it is commonly found in veterinary offices.  If someone reading this has an answer please share it in the comment section.
