Create A Sense-Enriching Garden For You and Your Great Dane
These are some of Martok’s ideas to create a safe and beautiful spot for your him to sniff, chew, roll and explore. His very own pet friendly garden.
Do you have a yard? I unfortunately don’t, I just have a patio where I lay in the sun almost everyday, this is sunny California after all. But if I did have a yard this is what would be in my dream garden.
Stuff for my big nose to sniff. Things like rosemary and garden sage are pup-friendly and smelly. Humans can also use them in their kitchens.
Sometimes I just like a little bit of greens in my diet. It does’t always mean my tummy is upset although sometimes it does. Some grass seeds are actually packaged for pets and include alfalfa, wheat oat, barley or rye grass.
I like mulch to nose about in or do my other business in. Just remember cocoa mulch is toxic for dogs, cats too, but I don’t expect any cats to visit my dream garden.
DIGGING!! I love digging so I want a place to dig. A sandy spot that is just mine and I won’t get in trouble for digging it up.
A water fountain. I don’t know about you but really prefer to drink moving water. Maybe a creek that I can cool my feet in as well would be nice.
If it is a really big garden and why not it’s my dream, I want places to climb and jump off or just get a better view from.
Tall and short grass. You know the feeling when running through grass that is a tall as a Great Dane? It’s great to be able to run and leap through. And I’d also like some short grass to roll on.
Of course I want all my plants to be pet-safe. If you need help figuring out your plants, LeafSnap is a plant-identifier app and the ASPCA has a webpage of toxic and non-toxic plants for pets.
