So you have taken the huge step of bringing home a Great Dane puppy.  A bundle of joy that is going to put on 10-20 pounds a month.  A puppy that will most likely be 100 pounds before reaching 1 year old.  Do you really know what havoc a 100 pound puppy can wreck?

I have to admit I don’t have much experience with the puppy stage of Great Danes.  Our youngest dog, K’Ehleyr, was 9 months when we adopted her.  Although our oldest, Selar, was still in need of house breaking when we adopted her at close to 4 years old.

We frequently get surprised responses when talking about the fact that all four of our Danes have been adopted.  People are just surprised that there are that many that need forever homes, why would anyone give up a Great Dane puppy after all?  Well as adorable as they are and as appealing the idea of a Great Dane is, when reality sets in having a human sized dog in the house does take some adjustments.

They are Gentle Giants

Yeah, right.  They can be gentle giants but they also can be huge oafs who leave dents in your walls, clear tables with the sweep of a tail, step on feet or other body parts and can head butt like a rhino.

We love our Danes or I wouldn’t have this entire blog space dedicated to them but we also have our share of bruises, concussions, and even a broken bone from over excited eagerness.  Know what you are getting into because any dog or puppy should be a forever commitment.

To help you know what you are in for when you do decide to get a Great Dane puppy, Zach Reed has created an ebook.  Zach is founder of greatdanecare.com where he strives to provide a single place to find answers to most Great Dane questions.

Zach’s ebook, The Great Dane Puppy Handbook, is a good resource for all those first questions you should be asking or will be facing in the first year.

Beyond Great Dane Puppyhood

Once you have survived the Great Dane puppy stage and are ready for more adventures, do what we do and hit the road.  Don’t be afraid to travel with your Great Dane.  After all a happy dog means a happy life!
