When you have a Great Dane you learn that some pet products cut it and some don’t. Here are some of the items our Great Danes have used over the years. This page will be an ongoing project. I will add Great Dane products that I find useful to share.
New Great Dane owners:
Zach Reed over at Great Dane Care created this ebook, The Ultimate Great Dane Guide, to help first-time Great Dane owners deal with the challenges that go along with a Great Dane puppy. Our four Great Danes have all come from rescues because their first owners maybe didn’t know what they were getting into. So check out Zach’s book if you want to know.
Leashes for Great Danes:
Martok is currently using the 6 in 1 Hands Free Leash by Kurgo. We previously used the Ruffwear Flat Out leash but it didn’t hold up well. For more info check out the blog post on Great Dane leashes.
After dark, keep your Dane visible with a lighted collar and leash.
Collars for Great Danes
Big dogs sometimes need more control than what a flat collar provides. Martok walks with a Gentle Leader for those times when the zoomies hit him. Another option from the same company as the Gentle Leader is an Easy Walk. This a harness which clips in the front giving you steering control at their chest.
Toys
With the exception of Selar, all our Great Danes have not been kind to their toys or beds for that matter. I am always on a quest to find toys who’s lifespans can be measured in more than minutes. Tuffy makes toys tha tmostly live up to their name. You can find them at this link: Tuffy. Always look for extra-large, extra-tough options.
Items for the ins and outs:
Does your Great Dane eat too fast?
If your Great Dane is a fast eater there are a couple options to slow her/him down. The Omega Portion Pacer can be placed in their existing food bowl. I recommend the large stainless version over the porcelain.
Poop Bags
In an effort to reduce our plastic footprint I changed our poop bags to Greener Walker. The term biodegradable is not as clear cut as you would expect. To read more about it check out this blog post, Sh*t happens.
Cleaning up those in house accidents
Effectively remove stains and odors, not just mask them, from carpets, hard floors, pet beds and furniture with the products by Unique Pet Care.
Helpful Great Dane products on the road:
We travel with our Great Danes, that is the foundation for this entire blog after all. Here are some of the items we don’t leave home without.
- A collapsable food container because it is easier to pack than a hard-sided one. We have a Kurgo one below is only good for a weekend trip and a larger bag for longer trips but it isn’t available anymore.
- Self inflating travel bed.
- Hydration pack for hiking. It’s only fair they carry their own water.
- Boots for foot protection to prevent injury or allow an injury to heal. More information is available at Hot Paws or dog boots.
- Skunk odor remover. There’s a story for this recommendation. Another skunk odor eliminator which I haven’t needed to try, thankfully, is by Unique Pet Care. It uses a combination of bacteria and enzymes to breakdown and remove the odors without harsh chemicals.
Great Dane Health:
Maintaining mobility is especially important with giant breed dogs such as Great Danes. All of our Danes have taken glucosamine and chondroitin to keep their joints healthy. Wag Worthy Naturals is not only a joint supplement but also donates a percentage of each sale to senior dog rescue and spay/neuter programs.
A condition that many young Great Dane’s face is happy tail syndrome. Both Varel and K’Ehleyr suffered from this to different degrees. K’Ehleyr actually lost 3 inches of her tail. If your Great Dane suffers from happy tail there is new a solution to help it heal and prevent further damage. It is called the K9 TailSaverTM. I wish we had this for K’Ehleyr.
We unfortunately had to deal with K’Ehleyr having osteosarcoma resulting in the amputation of her front leg. To help her get around we used a Ruffwear Web Master Harness and Brush Guard for added support. Other items we needed after her surgery included pee-pads and pill pockets. There are other reasons to need these items and I hope your Great Dane will not need them for the same reasons we did.
