All of our Great Danes have used elevated bowls to eat and drink from. In a previous blog post, DIY Great Dane elevated food stand, I discussed how I made elevated bowl stands out of PVC.. Martok, being the difficult boy that he is, likes to push his food around to find out what is at the bottom of the bowl. Or maybe he thinks the food should be moving like Gagh does when served live. Regardless of the reason he is doing it, frequently the end result is a bowl of food on the floor, and he doesn’t like to eat his food off the floor.
To solve this problem I created a foldable food shelf.
Items needed
- Wood table/stool top, 15” or whatever best fits your bowl diameter
- Tools to cut a straight edge and a circle
- Folding shelf brackets, I used the 8 inch ones
- Polycrylic and stain if desired
- Wood screws and wall screws
Measure your food bowl and mark it out. If you still have a compass around here is a real-world use for it. If your bowl is tapered remember to account for that.
Cut the straight edge that will be against the wall.
Cut the circle for the bowl. I didn’t have a jig saw so I used the circle cutter on a Dremel. The 1 inch wood was a little more than the Dremel was designed for and I didn’t get a clean cut circle.
I stained it to match our floor and used 3 coats of polycrylic to seal it.
I put some weather stripping around the hole to to keep the bowl from moving around in the larger than planned for hole. So much for all my careful measuring and compass use.
Mount the brackets on the table bottom making sure that they will be flush with the wall.
Mount it to the wall, I used drywall anchors since there wasn’t a stud to attach it to.
Even with my poor workmanship, It is a bit classier looking elevated bowl than the PVC stand and I don’t have to pick up dog food anymore. With the right wood working tools I’m sure it could be done better. The PVC stands are still a good option for travel since they come apart for easy transport.
