On a winter road trip my humans took me to a rather boring National Monument called Bandelier. It probably wasn’t boring to them but for dogs there isn’t much to do. There are no dog friendly trails so it only gets 1 paw. Together we would walk around the campground or I sat in the trailer or the truck while they explored the Ancestral Pueblo dwellings. The trails in the park have lots of ladders into the old cliff dwellings. I’m not good at ladders anyway and it was cold out.
Except for some deer, we did have the campground to ourselves, I guess it isn’t a popular place in late December when the temperature barely gets above freezing. Great Danes aren’t furry dogs, we aren’t designed for snow and cold. My humans do have a Fidofleece jacket for me to wear which I don’t complain about. At night I had to climb in bed with them because propane doesn’t like cold either and our trailer’s heater went out.
Nearby trails for dogs
Turns out there is a dog friendly area nearby that we didn’t know about at the time. The Department of Energy (DOE) area between the Bandelier National Monument entrance and the town of White Rock has a number of parking areas and access points where humans and dogs can walk together. A printable map is available of this area.
